Donate, Sell or Trade In? How to Choose

5 min read

There is no universally right answer here. It depends on how much the vehicle is worth, how much time you want to spend, and whether supporting a cause matters to you.

Private sale

Usually the highest cash return, and the most work: photos, a listing, messages, test drives, negotiation, payment risk and paperwork. Best when the car is desirable and running well.

Dealer trade-in

Fast and convenient, but typically below private-sale value, and it only makes sense if you are buying another vehicle at the same time. Older or non-running cars are often declined.

Donation

The lowest-effort route: a short form, free pickup, and paperwork handled for you. You do not get cash, and any tax benefit depends on itemizing and IRS rules. It tends to make the most sense for older, high-mileage or non-running vehicles where a private sale would be slow and low-value anyway.

A simple rule of thumb

  • Newer, clean, running and you want cash: sell privately
  • Buying a replacement today and want it simple: trade in
  • Old, tired, non-running, or you'd rather it help a cause: donate

Turn your car into good carma.

Free pickup, no hassle, and you choose the cause it supports.
